Cocklebury OLE Training Facility and Sidings Refurbishment

The Great Western Electrification Programme required facilities and resources to deliver technical training to the internal and external stakeholders to meet the forecast training demand that NR will have as a consequence of the programme.

The existing infrastructure located within the Cocklebury sidings reverted to network siding status and, in conjunction with the training facility, there was a requirement to develop a section of the sidings for use in both the medium and long term.

The requirements were driven by the electrification of the Great Western Main Line and resulted in the following:

  • Redesign and construction of the existing infrastructure so as to relocate existing on-track machine facilities to facilitate the use of the High Output Operating Base
  • Redesign and construct the existing vehicle access gates leading from Great Western Way into Cocklebury Sidings
  • Amey Rail engaged MECX to deliver the following elements of the work scope:
  • Foundations for buildings, specifically classrooms, kitchen/breakout area, administration office, reception, external storage container, workshop, washrooms, comms/plant room and a multi-faith/quiet room.
  • Slab walkways to all buildings
  • Delegate car parking for approximately 20 delegate vehicles
  • Segregated plant parking
  • External lighting to enable night training
  • Landscaping and hard areas
  • Enclosed spaces for waste bins
  • A covered smoking area
  • A turning circle for MEWP and HIAB vehicular access
  • Civil engineering works associated with new track and OLE asset installation
  • Access roadway
  • Various hard standing areas, walkways and access ramps to satisfy demands
  • Boundary security fencing
  • Pedestrian access
  • Making good, including backfill of investigation sites, reinstatement of surfacing and markings, spoil removal and making good surfacing that had undergone settlement

The project was completed on time and within budget.
